Our Name: The name Piney comes from a contraction of Pine Valley. The area was incorporated as the Local Government District of Piney on 1 January 1945 and became the Rural Municipality of Piney on 28 February 1997.
Population: The 2021 census counted 1,843 residents, up from 1,726 in 2016.
Location: The RM lies in southeastern Manitoba along the Minnesota border, about 130 kilometres from Winnipeg. It is bordered by the RMs of Stuartburn, La Broquerie and Reynolds, and by the Buffalo Point 36 Indian reserve. Its communities include Badger, Piney, Sandilands, South Junction, Sprague, Vassar, Wampum and Woodridge.
Culture and Economy: The RM strives to deliver services in a way that sustains a diversified economy and fosters multi-generational families. Residents organize festivals and volunteer activities. Agriculture and forestry are the principal industries, and the Sandilands Provincial Forest is enjoyed for snowmobiling, ATVing, cross-country skiing, fishing and hunting.
